Health and Safety
All members of the Leicester Hackspace should have read through the induction process as they are sent a link in the welcome email, so should be familiar with the basic issues associated with being a member of the Hackspace. Note the cross-over with Safeguarding.
Even with the best will in the world and a good focus on safety issues, things will go wrong. Even if you were OK please report all accidents, incidents and near misses, because the hazard may be less kind to the next person, and, if something is broken we need to fix or replace it.
Please use a copy of the Accident Reporting form, which are kept available in the Hackspace, with the First Aid box in the Kitchen.
An electronic copy is stored in the membership folder on the PC next to the printers.
Ensure the date and time is entered on the form as this will be used to store them, rather than having to allocate numbers to each form.
The completed form should be emailed to directors@leicesterhackspace.org.uk.
A printed copy should be given to a Director or placed in the top drawer of the filing cabinet, email is preferred.
By using the form for what may seem to be a minor incident,we are generating metrics to show members do follow a process.
This is the reference copy of the Hackspace document on Accident Reporting:
Legal Requirements
As of 2025 our insurers are asking to see Health and Safety Documentation, risk assessments, lone working policies etc. They have refused to insure injuries whilst using a circular saw unless we can prove all members have been trained in its use. For this reason as of February 2025 the circular saw has been taken out of use.
It is our belief that the following holds The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HSW Act) and the regulations made under it apply if any organisation (including a voluntary organisation) has at least one employee.
As the Hackspace does not have any employee it does not apply. However the following link [hackspace Foundation] states that although a health and safety policy is a legal requirement for companies with more than 5 employees, it is good practice to have one even if you are not an employer.
In the coming months we intend to create our own policy based on their example and use their Template Risk Assessments.
As of march 2025 the above policies are work in progress and all members are asked to review. Any comments should be emailed to directors@leicesterhackspace.org.uk or mentioned at a GM. They can only be improved on and made to work with members assistance.
